Tips Memilih BBM Yang Tepat
Penggunaan BBM yang tepat membuat proses pembakaran di ruang mesin jadi lebih sempurna. Hal tersebut berdampak pada performa mesin sepeda motor jadi lebih baik, konsumsi bahan bakar lebih irit dan umur mesin jadi lebih panjang. Karena itu, pemilik motor perlu memperhatikan jenis bahan bakar yang sesuai dengan spesifikasi mesin motornya sebelum membeli.
Salah satu cara dalam memilih bahan bakar yang tepat adalah dengan melihat rasio kompresi mesinnya. Angka rasio kompresi mesin sepeda motor Honda dapat dilihat dalam Buku Pedoman Pemilik yang di dapat ketika membeli sepeda motor Honda. Semakin tinggi rasio kompresinya, maka dibutuhkan bahan bakar dengan nilai oktan yang lebih tinggi.
Rasio Kompresi Mesin adalah rasio antara volume silinder dan ruang bakar ketika piston berada di titik mati bawah dengan volume ruang bakar saat piston berada di titik mati atas. Misalnya, silinder dan ruang bakar dengan piston berada di titik mati bawah berisi 1000 cc udara. Ketika piston telah pindah ke titik mati atas, volume tersisa dalam kepala atau ruang bakar menjadi 100 cc, maka rasio kompresi akan proporsional digambarkan sebagai 1000:100, atau dengan pecahan pengurangan, rasio kompresi 10:1.
Nilai oktan bahan bakar yang paling umum di seluruh dunia adalah nilai Research Octane Number (RON). Saat ini, tersedia pilihan bensin dengan nilai oktan terendah RON 88 hingga tertinggi RON 98.
Nilai oktan merupakan angka yang menunjukan seberapa besar tekanan yang bisa diberikan sebelum bensin terbakar secara spontan. Semakin tinggi nilai RON semakin besar tenaga yang dapat dihasilkan demikian pula semakin tinggi rasio kompresinya semakin besar tenaga yang dapat dihasilkan, sehingga rasio kompresinya yang tinggi tentunya memerlukan nilai RON yang tinggi pula.
Semakin tinggi nilai oktan berarti semakin tinggi pula ketahanan terhadap tekanan. Atau dengan kata lain, dibutuhkan tekanan lebih tinggi dan waktu lebih lama dalam proses pembakaran. Berlaku sebaliknya dengan bahan bakar oktan lebih rendah.

Efek Penggunaan Bahan Bakar yang Tidak Sesuai
Penggunaan bensin yang tidak sesuai dengan spesifikasi mesin dalam jangka panjang bisa menimbulkan masalah seperti mesin mengelitik (knocking) dan penumpukan deposit sisa pembakaran yang tidak sempurna. Jika terjadi terus menerus, sangat berpotensi menimbulkan kerusakan pada komponen mesin.
Misalnya penggunaan bensin oktan tinggi pada mesin kompresi rendah. Bensin dengan oktan tinggi membutuhkan tekanan lebih tinggi dan proses pembakaran lebih lama. Sehingga mesin menjadi kesulitan membakar bensin dengan oktan yang lebih tinggi, akibatnya tenaga mesin akan kurang maksimal dan pastinya lebih boros dari sisi biaya .
Hal itu berlaku sebaliknya pada penggunaan bensin oktan rendah pada mesin berkompresi tinggi. Ada kemungkinan bensin akan terbakar sebelum busi memercikkan api. Hal inilah yang menimbulkan terjadinya knocking dan penumpukan deposit sisa pembakaran karena proses pembakaran tidak sempurna. Dengan kata lain, penggunaan bensin dengan oktan tinggi tak membuat kerja mesin jadi lebih baik jika tak sesuai dengan spesifikasi mesinnya. Selain masalah pemilihan bahan bakar, perawatan berkala juga perlu dilakukan untuk menjaga performa motor jadi tetap optimal.
